On Scarcity

Our most lasting and fulfilling achievements are earned by helping others fulfill theirs.

I’ve recently noticed a mentality in others that I had otherwise been oblivious to; the scarcity mentality. It’s a mentality that tells people that there is a lack in life, that opportunities are few and far between. People in this mindset are often driven by anxiety and fear. They see life a competition with a set number of winners and losers. They are uneasy when someone else succeeds because that means one less opportunity for them. The scarcity mentality is about getting ahead, looking out for number one, and doing anything possible to be in the “winning” group.

The problem with this mentality is that it is not accurate or beneficial. Life is full of endless opportunities, abundance and excess. The Scriptures detail parable after parable of the God’s provision, of how his grace is sufficient, of His anointing, of our cup overflowing, his endless blessings, His favor, multiplication, fruition.

When we know this, and we live with this Truth, we experience an abundance mentality. The abundance mentality is about knowing there is always more, always new, always enough. When we live in this light, we are able to lift others up and take joy in their successes. The abundance mentality is constantly acknowledging and appreciating what is already there. It multiplies and grows, invests and encourages.

Next time you find yourself feeling envious or anxious, remind yourself that this isn’t it, there is always more, so much more.
